Cancún’s iconic Hotel Zone is getting a major upgrade as the city finalizes the renovation of 42 bus stops along Boulevard Kukulcán, with work now more than 90% complete, according to Ricardo Archundia, Coordinator of the Trust for the Strengthening of Tourism Activity of Quintana Roo.

The project aims to create safer, more comfortable, and sustainable spaces featuring solar panels, efficient lighting, mobile charging stations, and internet access. Each stop will also include security cameras connected to the C5 command center, improving both connectivity and safety for residents and visitors.

Los Cabos is set to boost its status as a leading luxury destination in Latin America with the opening of seven new luxury hotels and expanded flight connections to over 60 cities worldwide within the next three years. NEW FLIGHT ROUTES ANNOUNCED TO SOME OF MEXICO'S MAJOR DESTINATIONS

New sectors of the international tourism market continue to arrive in Mexico, thanks to the commitment of various international airlines towards the expansion of Mexico’s international flight connectivity.

In Puerto Vallarta, a new route from Prague, Czech Republic, will begin operation in 2025. The tourism office has highlighted that the objective of this new weekly flight is to attract tourists from the three major cities in the Czech Republic: Prague, Brno, and Ostrava. Arriving at the Vallarta International Airport every Tuesday, these flights will be available from April 2025.

In addition to the Czech Republic, it is hoped that the new flight will attract visitors from some of the neighboring Eastern European countries, such as Germany, Slovakia, Austria, and Poland, diversifying the tourism industry in the region.

In Cancún, these efforts are beginning as well, with a new direct route from Poland to Quintana Roo, operated in tandem between the Rainbow and LOT Polish airlines opening in time for the winter season. Flights will arrive twice a week; from Warsaw on Sundays, and from Katowice on Thursdays.

Beyond the Eastern European market, Cancún will also see an increase in connectivity with the Middle East, as Qatar Airways have announced the resumption of its flight route between Doha and Mexico City, with connections to Cancún. It is hoped that this new connection will open up Quintana Roo, and Mexico as a whole, to further expansion in the Middle Eastern and Asian markets, considering that currently only 200 annual visitors are registered from the Arabic region.

These efforts are part of a larger strategy to further establish Puerto Vallarta, Quintana Roo, and the whole country as one of the premier global destinations.

LOS CABOS CONTINUES GROWTH AS ONE OF THE MOST PROFITABLE TOURIST DESTINATIONS

The Los Cabos Hotel Association announced that new developments from brands such as Saint Regis, Vidanta, and Hyatt will open in 2025, significantly increasing the current inventory of 20,000 rooms.

Among the new openings is the Saint Regis, located in the Pacific region within the Cabo del Sol development, as well as Vidanta in East Cabo, where the first phase has already opened and will continue to expand throughout the year. Also in East Cabo, the ultra-luxury Aman property is expected to open, though it is uncertain if it will be ready by 2025. Additionally, in the Médano area, a boutique hotel from Grupo México Gran Hotels, called Gran Casola, will open in the city center.

“We currently have around 20,000 rooms, and this number will continue to grow. Next year, the opening of new hotels will add 500 more keys to the inventory; it’s a significant increase,” stated Lilzi Orcí Fregoso, a representative of the hotel sector.

According to figures from the Los Cabos Hotel Association, the destination is expected to reach an average occupancy rate of 75% in 2024. After a challenging year, the tourism sector anticipates an increase in visitor arrivals for 2025, driven by new hotel openings and the consolidation of the destination as a leader in luxury tourism.

HOLBOX NAMED ONE OF THE BEST ISLANDS IN NORTH AMERICA

The Island of Holbox has earned a spot on Condé Nast Traveller's 2024 list of the Top 10 Best Islands in North America. In the magazine's Reader’s Choice Awards, the idyllic island ranked fourth as the Best Island in North America, according to votes from global travelers. Located just north of Cancun, Holbox received an impressive score of 92.2% from travelers who recently visited the 42-kilometer-long island. The results of the Reader’s Choice Awards were announced last month. Holbox has been nominated in this category previously, having been named Best Island in North America in the 2023 Reader’s Choice Awards.

Bernardo Cueto Riestra, Secretary of Tourism for Quintana Roo, expressed that this recognition places both Holbox and the wider Mexican Caribbean on the global tourism map, celebrating the region's natural beauty and cultural richness.

“We are proud to see Holbox become an icon of North American tourism. Together with the Ministry of Tourism, we will continue working to improve infrastructure, preserve the natural environment, and promote the cultural authenticity that defines Quintana Roo,” he said.

“This achievement is just the beginning of a comprehensive strategy designed to bring opportunities and improve the quality of life for the families that are part of this community.”

Between January and August of this year, Holbox welcomed over 363,000 visitors. “With this award, Holbox solidifies its position as a unique destination that captivates travelers from around the world with its natural beauty and commitment to sustainability,” he concluded.

The Marietas Islands National Park offers an incredible variety of options for visitors, whether they’re looking for adventure or simply to enjoy nature. This is a brief guide to some o f the islands’ main attractions.

1. Playa Escondida (Hidden Beach)

This is the most iconic and widely recognized landmark in the Marietas. Also known as the “Playa del Amor” (Love Beach), it is sure to be the high point of any visit to the islands. This secluded beach is hidden away in the interior of a large crater, and is accessible exclusively through a small water tunnel, making it one of the world’s most singular beaches. Because of its ecological vulnerability, visitors to the Hidden Beach are limited to just 100 per day, which makes booking a guided tour a necessity.

2. Adventure activities

The park is an ideal place to take part in a wide variety of adventure and sports activities, such as diving, snorkeling, kayaking, and paddleboarding. With the clear waters off these shores and the abundance and diversity of marine life that make the islands their home, this is one of the best places on Earth to admire the majestic beauty of the underwater world.

3. Wildlife

The Marietas Islands offer an abundance of riches for wildlife enthusiasts. On the shore, birdwatchers will be able to visit an amazing variety of reproductive colonies, as the islands are home to more than 90 species of birds, including the famous blue-footed booby. The islands also boast the world’s largest brown booby reproductive colony, making the Marietas an essential place to visit for birdwatchers and enthusiasts!

NO MORE CHARGE FOR ARRIVING WITH TOO MANY ELECTRONICS IN CANCUN

As of October 11, passengers arriving at Cancun International Airport will not be charged for having too many electronics. Prior to October 11, passengers arriving with more than one computer (laptop) were charged a tax by Mexico’s SAT (Servicio de Administración Tributaria).

This often led to confusion, as the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) does not limit the number of laptops passengers can pack, even for international travel. Because of this rule on the Mexican side, travelers arriving at Cancun airport were being taxed as much as USD$190 per over-the-limit item.

This month, state officials announced the change at Cancun airport. According to Governor Mara Lezama, the electronics limit law was lifted after an airport meeting with Customs. “After attending a work meeting at the Cancun International Airport, Governor Lezama announced that with the support and consideration of the General Director of the National Customs Agency, it has been decided to eliminate the criterion that imposed a charge on passengers who entered with computers or electronic tablets as their personal equipment,” Lezama said in a statement, “For Quintana Roo, tourism is a priority, and the streamlining of tourist service processes must be permanent.’’

Lezama said she became aware of the problem through meetings, social media, and news articles that reported the imposition of a charge for the entry of these devices, after which time she organized various working groups with the National Customs Agency. “After a visit to the airport and a review of various procedures and criteria, an agreement was reached to eliminate this charge,” she said. In making this announcement, the Governor of Quintana Roo welcomed travelers: “Welcome to the New Era of the Mexican Caribbean. We await you with open arms.”

DELTA TO START NEW YEAR WITH DETROIT-TULUM FLIGHTS

Delta Airlines has announced the New Year will kick off with a new direct flight to Tulum. Starting January 11, 2025 Delta will introduce flights from Detroit to Tulum (TQO), a first for the airline.

Tulum is celebrated for its stunning beaches, ancient Mayan ruins and rich cultural heritage, making it an ideal destination for relaxing and exploring.

In addition, Delta announced they are adding other Mexico flights starting in the New Year, such as Los Angeles to Mazatlán. Meanwhile, Aeromexico launches services from Newark to Mexico City, and Denver to Monterrey.

Joe Esposito, Delta’s Senior V.P. of Network Planning, said about the announcement: “Mexico is one of our most popular destinations for US customers. That’s why we’re adding four new destinations in Mexico this year, giving our customers even more ways to experience Latin America’s rich cultural heritage.” With these new routes, Delta will operate up to 50 weekly flights to five destinations in Mexico, including other popular spots like Cancun, Cabo San Lucas, Mexico City, and Puerto Vallarta. Delta will offer 10 weekly flights from the U.S. to Tulum, with four flights on Saturdays.

PUERTO VALLARTA IS READY FOR THE 29TH INTERNATIONAL GOURMET FESTIVAL!

The 29th edition of Puerto Vallarta’s International Gourmet Festival invites food enthusiasts and connoisseurs from around the world to enjoy a wide array of activities while discovering the finest examples of Mexican and international gastronomy in Puerto Vallarta, Riviera Nayarit, and Tepic.

In this edition, 24 noted restaurants will take part, inviting outstanding chefs to collaborate on special festival-exclusive menus. This year’s program is jam-packed with famous chefs and local culinary rising stars, who will show their experience in creating unique gastronomic events.

Among the many exciting events taking place during the festival, the grand opening night, with its “Great Gatsby” theme, is sure to be a stand out. LOS CABOS RECOGNIZED BY THE MICHELIN GUIDE AS A TOP GASTRONOMIC DESTINATION

Los Cabos has become a renowned gastronomic destination, thanks to its diverse and innovative culinary offerings, most of which bring together local tradition with international influences, with a heavy emphasis on fresh seafood and local ingredients. Because of this booming gastronomic scene, the Michelin Guide has recognized Los Cabos as one of the world’s premier culinary destinations.

Rodrigo Esponda, director of FITURCA, the Los Cabos Tourism Trust, said, “there are 18 restaurants in the region that appear in the Michelin Guide, with 3 of them meriting a Michelin star, as well as two organic farms serving farm-to-table food. There is a great diversity of restaurants cementing Los Cabos as Mexico’s premier gastronomic destination.”

"Our last green day was a great success. Originally, our plan was to clean up a beach in Cancún, but as the DM team arrived, we realized that the parking lot and the surrounding street were full of trash, so we decided to focus our efforts on cleaning up those areas, and we collected a staggering amount of waste.

The experience was incredible, especially because we were able to see the immediate impact our work was having. We were proud to leave one of our favorite beaches cleaner and tidier, and knowing that what we did made a difference was very gratifying. We can proudly say that we picked up all of the trash that was on that street!

One of the best things was the reactions of people passing by. We had a lot of words of encouragement and gratitude, which was a great motivation to carry on our work. We felt like we were truly contributing to the community's wellbeing!"

NEW ROUTES ANNOUNCED TO LOS CABOS

Los Cabos is one of the most important tourist destinations in Mexico, and with the announcement of eight new flight routes to the Baja California Sur destination, its profile continues to grow. As a result of agreements reached during the 2024 Tianguis Turístico de México, the Volaris, Aeroméxico, and Viva Aerobús airlines will commence direct flights from Monterrey, Guadalajara, Querétaro, León, Tijuana, Mérida, and Puebla.

In addition to these domestic flights, a new direct route from Frankfurt, Germany, was announced. The route, managed by Condor Flugdienst, will begin in November and will operate two flights a week, further opening up Los Cabos to the European market.

Currently, Los Cabos welcomes an average of 130 daily flights, 85 domestic and 45 international. With these new routes, the weekly number of flights arriving in Los Cabos will rise to over 900. This increase in connectivity is a huge boost to the tourism industry and the local economy, generating significant opportunities in the transport, hospitality and service sectors.

Throughout all of 2024, the airport has consolidated its international connectivity with more than 300 weekly direct flights from 30 airports in the United States and Canada, including Los Angeles, Dallas, Phoenix, Baltimore, Las Vegas, Milwaukee, Toronto, Calgary, and Vancouver.

Los Cabos has once again been recognized as one of the tourism industry’s leading destinations during Virtuoso Travel Week 2024, held from August 10 to 15 in Las Vegas, Nevada. This event, one of the most important for tourism globally, brought together 5,000 representatives from all over the tourism sector, including hotels, destinations, receptive and tour operators, and specialized travel agents.

Los Cabos is home to 14 hotels within the prestigious Virtuoso network, representing a total of 18,600 world-class rooms––no other destination in the Virtuoso network has such a high concentration of luxury hotels in one place.

During the event, it was announced that the Los Cabos Tourism Trust (FITURCA) has been nominated for the third consecutive year as the best local tourism office in the world, a recognition that underlines its leadership in the global tourism industry.

During the event, FITURCA presented the main attractions in Los Cabos in 60 group sessions for 480 travel advisors, highlighting the unique characteristics of the destination. GOL AIRLINES TO RESUME DIRECT FLIGHTS BETWEEN BRAZIL AND CANCUN

The Brazilian airline Gol Linhas Aéreas will resume its direct flights between Brazil and Cancún, starting on December 10th. The airline will offer two weekly flights which will attract a greater number of visitors from Brazil and the South American continent.

“Direct flights between Brazil and Cancún were suspended in February 2023 and now, with a recovery in demand and a renewed vision of the new era of tourism in Quintana Roo, Gol will be the only airline to offer this direct route with two weekly flights,” Governor Mara Lezama said in a statement.

She continued, “the viability of operations to Cancún, one of the largest tourist destinations in the world, which currently does not have direct flights from Brazil, represents an immense gain for Brazilians, Mexicans and, other leisure travelers from all over South America.”

“Gol’s objective is to bring our people closer and contribute to the development of tourism throughout the region,” said Rafael Araújo, the Director of Gol Air Planning. The resumption of flights to Cancún is part of Gol’s international expansion. With this, Quintana Roo is increasingly connected to the world, bringing more tourism than ever to the Yucatán peninsula.

THE RITZ CARLTON RESIDENCES TO DEBUT IN MEXICO’S CARIBBEAN COAST

The Ritz-Carlton is set to make its entry into Mexico’s Caribbean coast with the planned opening of The Ritz-Carlton, Riviera Maya and The Ritz-Carlton Residences, Riviera Maya. The resort and residences are situated among 220 acres of jungle and mangroves, and offer views of the Caribbean Sea and Yucatan coastline. The site offers 1,600 feet of private shoreline, ideal for swimming, reef snorkeling, paddle boarding and other water sports. Sales and construction will begin this year, and the first phase is expected to debut in 2026 with 29 residences and the Ritz-Carlton Riviera Maya resort. When completed, The Ritz-Carlton Residences Riviera Maya will consist of 127 furnished residences.

The Ritz-Carlton Riviera Maya will have 300 rooms and suites, four pools and The Lagoon—a family-friendly swimming area. Food and drink options will include Bonfire, showcasing grilled items; Sagrado, a traditional Mexican bakery and café, offering on-the-go options; Excursion Lounge, serving quick bites; The Farmhouse, a farm-to-table concept; Aldea, a minimalist, indigenous food market; and The Beach Club. Guests can enjoy al fresco dining at Restaurant Central—an open-air food hall with six venues, complete with an on-site distillery, wine cellar, and speakeasy. The resort will also include a Spa, Kids Club, Teens Club, and a sports club offering professional tennis and pickleball courts.

On the other hand, the Ritz-Carlton Residences Riviera Maya are being envisioned as a self-contained village, with 13 beachfront estates, 82 grand residences, and 32 mangrove cottages.

A MAGICAL NATURAL SPECTACLE IN PUERTO VALLARTA

Like every year, the sea turtle nesting season has begun on the Mexican Pacific coast. A large number of endangered species such as olive ridley, hawksbill, and leatherback turtles come to the shores of Nayarit to nest, and Puerto Vallarta has conservation programs for these vulnerable reptiles.

Some hotels in the bay, such as the Marriott and the Hyatt, have their own turtle camps where the nests are protected until the eggs hatch. Once that happens, they offer their guests the experience of accompanying the newborn hatchlings to the seashore as they begin their lives in the vast ocean.

Turtle releases are free, open to the general public, and take place in the hours before sunset during the summer and fall. Helping these tiny vulnerable creatures reach the ocean safely is a wonderful experience that you’ll never forget!

SPOTLIGHT ON: GUANAJUATO

A survey of 2000 visitors in Guanajuato, Mexico shows that only 1.4% of people surveyed reported not being satisfied with their stay, and of those people, only .05% reported feeling uncomfortable or unsafe in Guanajuato. The Secretary of Tourism has reported that from July to August 2024, the state of Guanajuato expects 2.4 million visitors and an economic impact of more than 5.6 billion pesos.

Guanajuato is known for its long history of silver mining and its beautiful colonial architecture, boasting some of Mexico’s most picturesque streets and alleyways, including the famous “Callejón del Beso,” roughly translated as the Kissing Alley — so named because the alleyway is so narrow that a couple standing on opposite balconies would be able to reach for a kiss!

It is also home to the Alhóndiga de Granaditas, a hugely important site in Mexico’s fight for independence in the 19th century. This old grain storehouse was the setting of one of the most important battles in the Independence War, and is now home to a regional history museum.

One of the city’s most famous attractions is the Guanajuato Mummies museum, which is home to over 100 mummies that were exhumed from the city’s Santa Paula cemetery from 1865 to 2002. These naturally mummified bodies have been preserved by the peculiar conditions of Guanajuato’s soil, in particular the presence of nitrates and alum, and were first exhumed because of a local tax that was in place, requiring a fee to be paid for ongoing burial.

Guanajuato is a city of contrasts and rich cultural heritage, and a destination that more international travellers are discovering every day!

SAN JOSÉ DEL CABO NAMED A "MAGICAL NEIGHBORHOOD"

Twelve neighborhoods around the country have recently been named “Barrios Mágicos” (Magical Neighborhoods), including the first in Baja California Sur, San José del Cabo’s historic center. At the Tianguis Internacional de Pueblos Mágicos, held in San Antonio, Texas, Miguel Torruco Marqués from the Department of Tourism (Sectur) gave the following additional neighborhoods the “Barrio Mágico” designation: La Estación in Aguascalientes, Ojo de Agua in Coahuila, Colima Capital in Colima, Tenayuca-Santa Cecilia in Estado de México, Tetelcingo in Morelos, Bellavista in Nayarit, San Francisco “El Origen” in Puebla, San Francisco Anbanica in Querétaro, Paseo del Ángel in Sinaloa, Victoria in Tamaulipas, and Mexicapan in Zacatecas.

As Torruco Márques said, “there are cultural, adventure, and nature destinations that can be found all across the country — Mexico’s tourism offerings are innumerable.” Barrios Mágicos are iconic neighborhoods in cities across the country that capture and reflect the spirit and essence of their cities, as well as being full of tradition, charm, and mysticism.

Baja California Sur has three “Pueblos Mágicos” (Magical Towns), a similar designation that is given to towns that exemplify the traditions and colors of a particular region: Santa Rosalía, Loreto, and Todos Santos. Now, the historic downtown of San José del Cabo—a neighborhood that is full to the brim of tradition, color, history and artistic expression—joins their ranks, further solidifying the state of Baja California Sur as one of the best tourist destinations in the country.

Mexico's Tourism Industry Reveals Strong Start to 2024

Mexico's tourism industry has started the year with positive numbers, mainly in destinations such as Cancun, Puerto Vallarta, Los Cabos and Mexico City––places that have recorded high numbers of visitors from the United States and Canada. Mexico started 2024 receiving more international tourists, capturing higher income from foreign visitors, and obtaining a higher average expenditure from these tourists than the same period in 2023.

With data from the International Traveler Surveys of the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI), the consultancy specialized in tourism, Gemes, announced that, in January, 3.6 million tourists arrived in Mexico: 124,000 more than in 2023, which represented a growth of 3.6 percent.

Gemes also reported that, in February 2024, the four airports that recorded the largest influx of foreign tourists were Cancun, Mexico City, Puerto Vallarta, and Los Cabos. These are the percentage increases reported compared to 2023:

Cancun — 10.7 percent

Mexico City — 2.4 percent

Puerto Vallarta — 14 percent

Los Cabos — 5.7 percent

Cancun Airport, which receives visitors mainly from the United States and Canada, recorded the arrival of more than 1 million travelers, which accounted for more than 46 percent of international arrivals in Mexico.

Last month, our Sales and Public Relations Director, Stephen Crossley, was honored to be invited to the University of Baja California Sur (UABCS) to join the Atrapanieblas team for an informational talk and the installation of a fogcatcher on campus grounds. Joining the team behind the project were staff from the University and students from their Water Management program, who got a chance to learn about the science behind this project and the positive environmental impact it will have.

Sharing this work with the academic community in Baja California Sur is an important step towards increasing support and funding for the project, and Stephen was proud to be there representing Destination Mexico. He said, “at our company, we believe that the tourism industry should be at the forefront of any environmental conservation efforts, and that’s why we have committed to setting an example of conscience and action for all tourism companies in our country.” He continued, “we are honored to be supporting the Atrapanieblas project, and to be able to join the team in raising awareness, both with our community and with our foreign visitors. Nuevo Nayarit Featured in the National Geographic and booking.com rankings

Nuevo Nayarit tops the list of trending national destinations for 2024, according to the National Geographic and booking.com rankings, and NatGeo has named Playa Escondida as one of the 40 most beautiful beaches in the world.

According to Booking, 45% of Mexican travellers will seek to spend their vacations in destinations that are close to the water. While Cancún has always been one of the preferred destinations for national tourists, they predict that places such as Nuevo Nayarit and Puerto Escondido will become more popular due to their offerings that match every budget.

Meanwhile, the renowned travel and nature magazine National Geographic recently released its ranking of the 40 most beautiful beaches in the world, with Playa Escondida coming in at #25. Among great beaches from all over the world such as Bora Bora in Tahiti and many others, Playa Escondida is also joined by Tulum, the majestic beach surrounded by Mayan ruins in the state of Quintana Roo.

Secrets Playa Blanca Costa Mujeres debuts in Mexico

Hyatt Hotels has announced the opening of Secrets Playa Blanca Costa Mujeres, the latest Inclusive Collection resort to open in Mexico. The 507-room, adults-only resort is situated along a secluded strip of white-sand beach and will be opening in a three-phased approach over the next six months. Guests can expect the spa, fitness center and theater to be fully operational by June.

The resort welcomes guests from a second-story, open-air lobby. The suites are designed to showcase diverse views including lush landscapes, pools and the Caribbean Sea. All guests will enjoy “Unlimited-Luxury” inclusions such as 24-hour room service, a daily refreshed in-room minibar, endless daytime and nighttime entertainment, pool and beach wait service, and more. Preferred Club accommodations provide an extra level of luxury with elevated room categories, including swim-outs and upgraded oceanfront suites, all with an oversized soaking tub on the terrace, as well as upgraded amenities, such as personalized check-in and checkout, concierge services and more. Additionally, Preferred Club guests have exclusive access to the Preferred Club Lounge, an oceanfront Beach Bar and an infinity pool.

Secrets Playa Blanca Costa Mujeres offers nine dining establishments, including gluten-free and vegetarian menu options. Options range from El Patio, offering authentic Mexican cuisine, to traditional Japanese Tatami rooms serving handmade sushi and Pan-Asian cuisine. The Italian restaurant, Portofino, has its own wine cellar. Additionally, eight bars and lounges serve a range of beverages. Those looking for special dining experiences can book the Chef’s Table, romantic dinners, and tequila- and wine-tasting sessions for an additional cost. The hotel also features four large pools, including two oceanfront infinity pools, a free-flowing Preferred Club pool, a pool inside the 29,000-square-foot Secrets Spa, and 10 smaller pools exclusively for those staying in swim-out suites.

Off-property, travelers can explore the town with a short ferry ride to the nearby island of Isla Mujeres or Isla Contoy National Park, one of Mexico’s protected parks, offering a range of experiences, including reef snorkeling. Also within close proximity is the Playa Mujeres Golf Course, a Greg Norman signature 18-hole course, as well as the Puerto Cancun Shopping Centre.

Mexico Ranked among the Top 10 most visited countries in the world

Year after year, travelers from all around the world choose Mexico as the perfect destination for their holidays and events, and this year is no exception! The 2024 ranking published by the World Tourism Organization presents the destinations that have been the most popular among travelers last year. Additionally, the study presents the trends in the first quarter of 2024 and reveals the percentage increase in visitor numbers compared to 2019 before the pandemic.

New Flight route announced between Mcallen & Cancun

Mara Lezama, the governor of the state of Quintana Roo, has announced a new flight route to be opened between McAllen and Cancún. The route will be operated by Volaris, and will begin operations on July 3rd.

This new route will significantly increase flight connectivity between Quintana Roo and more than 40 cities in the United States, which represents a considerable boon to the region’s tourist and cultural industries.

The route will operate biweekly, on Wednesdays and Saturdays, with departures from Cancún scheduled for 12:15, and returns from McAllen at 16:05. This will allow travellers to enjoy a direct and uncomplicated travel experience, facilitating access to both regions’ tourist and cultural attractions.

The governor highlighted the importance of this route as a contributor to a “new era of tourism” in Quintana Roo, and she reiterated her administration’s commitment to promoting unforgettable tourist experiences for all visitors to the state. In addition to strengthening the local economy and promoting a broader cultural exchange between the two regions, the new route will further solidify Cancún’s International Airport as an important nexus for international tourism in the country.

Embark on a journey to meet the brilliant minds steering the Atrapanieblas sustainable innovation project – a groundbreaking initiative brought to life by scientists dedicated to transforming the landscape of water scarcity in Baja California Sur.

Oscar Trujillo Millán is a marine biologist who graduated from the Universidad Autónoma de Baja California Sur (UABCS) in 2001. His academic journey continued with a master’s degree and a doctorate from the Centro Interdisciplinario de Ciencias Marinas at the Instituto Politécnico Nacional (IPN) in 2009. Currently a full-time professor and researcher at UABCS, Trujillo Millán’s expertise lies in the biology, physiology, and ecology of marine fish. Recognized by the Sistema Nacional de Investigadores (SNI) and the Programa para el Desarrollo Profesional Docente, he played a pivotal role in the interdisciplinary development and coordination of the water management bachelor’s program from 2009 to 2015.

Christian Salvadeo is a marine biologist who graduated from UABCS in 2003. His academic journey led him to complete a master’s degree and a doctorate in marine sciences at the Centro Interdisciplinario de Ciencias Marinas (CICIMAR) at IPN. As a Professor-Investigator in the Department of Marine Biology at UABCS, Salvadeo specializes in the ecology of marine mammals, fisheries, and climate variability. Recognized as Level 1 in the Sistema Nacional de Investigadores (SNI), his impactful contributions extend to projects addressing climate change and natural resources. His work has influenced national policies, evident in the government’s use of his conclusions in the preparation of the fifth communication for the United Nations Climate Change Conference.

The team is working hard at making sure everyone trusts this project so that it lasts and truly becomes sustainable.

Neblinometer Installations:

Join us in celebrating the success of the Atrapanieblas team as they expertly assembled two pairs of neblinometers – structures that assess the potential for fog water harvesting at sites before constructing larger fog collectors. One pair has found its home in Puerto Alcatraz on Isla Margarita near Bahia Magdalena, responding to the call from local residents who identified a potentially foggy area. Another pair was installed in February in Todos Santos with the enthusiastic support of students and teachers from La Palapa school, who have been actively involved since the project was presented to them in December 2023.

The Atrapanieblas team have also continued to gather data from neblinometers installed in Mulegé (Guerrero Negro, Vizcaíno, and Diaz Ordaz) and Comondú (Puerto Alcatraz). Results vary across zones, showcasing the diversity and complexity of fog water harvesting potential.

Next Steps for the Project:

As we eagerly anticipate the next chapter, the Atrapanieblas team gears up for the installation of four fog water collectors in the UABCS campus during March. This milestone will evaluate performance and resilience before deployment in communities.

Four Seasons Resort and Residences Cabo San Lucas at Cabo Del Sol is now open for reservations and will begin welcoming guests on May 1, 2024. “As we expand our portfolio in the most sought-after vacation destinations around the world, Cabo San Lucas has long been on our list, and we are thrilled to be opening a brand new Four Seasons experience that beautifully complements our existing resort on the more remote East Cape of Los Cabos,” says Antoine Chahwan, president, Hotel Operations – America.
