PUERTO VALLARTA LAUNCHES MAJOR RESTORATION OF EL COAPINOLE LAGOON
July 6, 2025
Puerto Vallarta is stepping up its environmental efforts with the launch of its first-ever ecohydrological restoration project, set to begin in 2026 at El Coapinole lagoon. Located in the city’s northern zone, this neglected wetland will be the focus of a transformative initiative led by Mayor Luis Munguía’s administration. The goal: to revive a vital ecosystem that has long suffered from seasonal drying, sediment buildup, and invasive species.

Ecohydrology, which bridges the fields of ecology and hydrology, will guide the project’s approach—restoring natural water flow, managing native plant and animal life, and protecting critical wildlife habitats. This is a key move not just for the local environment, but for the broader region, as Puerto Vallarta joins a growing movement across Jalisco and Nayarit to conserve and restore coastal ecosystems under increasing stress.

Beyond ecological goals, the project will benefit the city’s communities. Plans include the development of the Coapinole Linear Park, a green corridor that will connect the lagoon to the nearby La Bobadilla Sports Complex. This will provide accessible public space and recreational opportunities for residents in under-resourced areas of the city.

With this bold step toward sustainability, Puerto Vallarta is setting a precedent for urban ecological restoration across the Mexican Pacific coast—one that blends environmental stewardship with community impact.
